A few years ago a group of sociologists in California set out to measure what—as they put it—“matters most in people’s lives today.” In a book entitled Habits of the Heart, they wrote that the questions people came up with were very simple. Like: “How ought we to live?”: “Who are we?”: “What shall we teach our children?” In short, said the sociologists, what people are asking for is “How can I preserve a coherent life which makes sense to me?”

What We Live For: A Humanist's Affirmation by Matthew Ies Spetter - 1997
platform | affirmation | leader | (add_tags)
All of us want to make sense out of the time in which we live. Both privately and socially we maintain a dialogue with what we are experiencing.

The problem is that we can hold many ideas and values at the same time even when they are not compatible ...

Undauted resilience of the Humam Heart by Matthew Ies Spetter - 1998
platform | leader | (add_tags)
There are turning points in the lives of all of us.1 At such moments we confront the deeper questions from the stillness of our hearts. We may not even have been aware that we were so questioning ourselves and we have no answers ready. Those questions at the turning points are about what the realities of our lives actively are. We discover that we have been hungering for some purpose, some aim, beyond all rationalizations behind which we so often hide ourselves from ourselves ...

When Loss and Grief Come: What Will Sustain Us? by Matthew Ies Spetter - 1998
platform | loss | grief | leader | (add_tags)
A man who had recently lost his wife told me that he felt that his grief would never end. It had been a very good second marriage for both of them and then the disaster struck of a rapidly spreading disease with much suffering toward the end. His devastation was without relief ...

Invitation to Hope: The Humanist Passion by Matthew Ies Spetter - 1998
platform | passion | leader | (add_tags)
The main theme for this address was suggested by a new book by Prof. Robert Veninga of the University of Minnesota A Gift of Hope. (Little Brown, Boston, MA. 1985). Many of Prof. Veninga’s concepts have been woven into my considerations ...

“God Bless you” is how politicians these days conclude their speeches. But no one appointed them to the priestly function to bestow blessings. They want our votes. Fine! But quasi religious exclamations are meant to be manipulative. Faith, is the private business of the citizen ...

For This we Stand: D-Day After Fifty-five Years by Matthew Ies Spetter - 1999
platform | dday | leader | (add_tags)
Do we remember only as a blur? Do lives, that mattered so much to us, become “the peopled forest” of our minds as Stephen Spender put it?
