. . . Land that I Love . . . America at Thanksgiving 2001 by Matthew Ies Spetter - 2001 platform | leader |
Thanksgiving has come and gone and ahead lies the holiday season. But it is shot through this year with the awareness of loss. Loss of the sense of security. But loss especially because we know of that terrible burial ground in our midst where the lives of 4000 men, women and children were destroyed. So much innocent life, so many dreams, of people like us, extinguished, so many hopes pulverized, just a bus ride from our homes ...

The University of Illinois Press is doing a great service to readers with ethical and social concerns by reissuing a series of American radical novels of the mid-twentieth century. The Big Boxcar by Alfred Maund, originally published in 1957, is the ninth in the series. Maund, a Southern white man, has written three novels. This was his first, but at the time of writing, he was already an experienced labor journalist and editor as well as an active supporter of the Montgomery (Alabama) bus boycott and the Cuban Revolution.

An Ethical Concept of God by David Saville Muzzey - 1980
One of the questions inevitably asked of a member of an Ethical Society is, Do you believe in God? At first sight this seems like a simple question which can be answered by Yes or No. But in reality it is a very complex question. Everybody except the avowed atheists (and they are comparatively few) believes in some kind of God. Even the devils, we are told, "believe and tremble." And no tribe of men has ever been found that did not have its gods.
An Ethical Concept of God by Algernon Black - 1950

Wise parents know that they must not expect the child to accept indoctrination with beliefs which they no longer hold themselves.

Ann Jones' Women Who Kill by Phyllis Ehrenfeld - 1996 jones | kill | women |
"Lizzie Borden took an axe, and gave her father forty whacks. Then she took another one, and gave her mother forty-one." Would the public forgive? Perhaps, but it helped if you were a lady. The most famous murderess in American history was found innocent in a court of law, in spite of both motive and evidence. Jones' detailed analysis of each of the cases she presents is as intriguing as a summary of a whodunit.

Anna Garlin Spencer Volunteer Award by Staff - 2009
The Board of Directors of the AEU voted at its September 2008 meeting to develop an internal "AEU Ethical Volunteer Award" to recognize the grass roots nature of our religion and to acknowledge the unsung work of members of its affiliated ethical congregations. At its January 2009 meeting, the AEU Board adopted the description, criteria, and process below and named this award after one of the most well-known and recognized woman leaders in Ethical Culture, Anna Garlin Spencer.

Are We Religious? by Algernon Black - 1975

Building Membership by Bob Kaufmann - 1990
A wide ranging advisory on how to attract newcomers, welcome them, bring them into membership and integrate them fully into the congregation. While some of the points are focused specifically at a Unitarian congregation, the monograph is a treasure trove of general and specific practices and attitudes pertinent to ethical societies that will lead to substantial growth and enhancement of the congregation if we implement them. When you get beyond the authoritarian tone of some of the recommendations, you will find innumerable gems of wisdom that you can see the logic of and readily apply. Some of the recommendations would take a staff of several individuals working full time to accomplish, others can be implemented by every member in the normal course of their daily activity. We recommend that you be selective and identify just a few of the recommendations that seem most appropriate to your society and set a goal to implement those. After those practices have been well established add a few others that you are prepared for. As your membership grows and more resources become available additional membership building recommendations can be taken on. Membership development can be recognized easily in the number of members, number of programs, number of newcomers, engagement of existing members, financial support. Membership development can be appreciated more qualitatively by the way people treat the other members of the society and by the positive impact of your programs on the broader community.

Civility by Joseph Chuman - date n.a.
Things have changed. Civility has taken another blow, and I don't like it. Mine are not the ravings of a supercilious conservative or moralistic doomsayer. I am a progressive, a Leader in the Ethical Culture Movement, for whom the struggle for social justice is a religious passion. Human right, freedom of conscience, racial harmony and the welfare of children have all been on my agenda. Only a small fraction of these efforts have landed on the barricades; dramatic displays of success have been relatively few. Dreams of victory are chastened by the enormity of the opposition and the paucity of resources.

Distinctive Features of the Ethical Movement by Alfred W. Martin - 1975 history | features | movement |
At its very inception the Ethical Movement was a religious movement. The group of men and women who met on that memorable Sunday morning, May 15th, 1876, were in search of something wherewith to consecrate their lives. They were of one mind in the belief that the human spirit is all starved and forlorn save as it comes into vital contact with an ideal of holiness.

Margaret was a proud woman. Her coifed hair, meticulous attire, a love of art and music testified to her refined, aristocratic tastes. Her bearing suggested a person whose sense of self was firmly rooted in the ability to order her life and tame the ruffles of unruly misfortune.

Ethical Action Structure for Proposals by Staff - 2006
Ethical Action is an essential element in the Ethical movement, yet as a national movement,
we’ve been either inconsistent, ineffective, inactive, unfocused, or understaffed on Ethical
Action too much of our recent history. While much Ethical Action needs to be done at the local
level, and part of the AEU’s mission is to help Societies become more effective in local Ethical
Action, there is also a need for unified efforts on a national scale in order to achieve what our
Societies want to achieve.

Feeling Guilty by Arthur Dobrin - date n.a.
Many thoughtful parents want to shield their children from feelings of guilt or shame in much the same way that they want to spare them from fear. Guilt and shame as methods of discipline are to be eschewed along with raised hands and leather straps. Fear, guilt and shame as methods of moral instruction are seen as failures in decent parenting. Parents want their children to be happy and how can you feel happy when you are feeling guilty, fearful or ashamed? If we were really convinced that using fear, guilt or shame as methods of discipline worked, though, we might be more ready to use them as techniques. But we aren't convinced that this is the case. We won't have more socially responsible people if fear, guilt and shame are part of their disciplinary diet as children.

A few years ago a group of sociologists in California set out to measure what—as they put it—“matters most in people’s lives today.” In a book entitled Habits of the Heart, they wrote that the questions people came up with were very simple. Like: “How ought we to live?”: “Who are we?”: “What shall we teach our children?” In short, said the sociologists, what people are asking for is “How can I preserve a coherent life which makes sense to me?”

How does buying a BMW, a Rolex, or a golf club membership affect your life and others' lives? You might say the car is safe transportation, the watch is a reliable timepiece -- one you've wanted since graduate school and that you've earned with all those late nights at the office. You might see the golf club membership as necessary for someone in your line of work, where deals are done on Saturdays at the 19th hole. Few of us come right out and admit, even to ourselves, that what we're buying is status. And few of us have calculated the true price of such status symbols.

Mental Health and Ethical Conduct by Lawrence K Frank - 1975
Today our new knowledge of personality development makes it possible to revise some ancient teachings. Some remarkable changes have already taken place--as for example in the criminal law. For generations we have believed, and the lawyers and the courts have maintained, that if an individual violated the law, stole property, damaged the property of others, or injured another not accidentally, or in any way infringed upon the rights of others, he was to be caught if possible, tried and, if convicted, punished.

Millions of Christian fundamentalists eagerly await their rapture to heaven. Catholics report increased sightings of the Virgin Mary. In Japan, members of the Aum Shinrikyo sect release deadly nerve gas into the Tokyo subway. Eighty members of the Branch Davidians in Waco, Texas are killed in a stand-off with federal officials, and 39 devotees of the Heaven's Gate cult in California decorously commit suicide as they plan to enter the next Level Above Human. These faithful, however different in their religious practices, share a common belief: the year 2000 -- the new millennium -- will mark the beginning of the end of the world.

This is a summary of a series of articles containing the AEU Strategic Plan, various Proposals and Forms.
Proposal: Committee Leadership by Staff - 2005
This proposal seeks to amend the bylaws of the AEU to clarify the duties and responsibilities of group chairs and the succession of individuals to those positions.
Proposal: Communication From Members/Societies by Staff - 2005
Ethical Societies have many common needs that are met with local resources, but these resources are often not shared with other member Societies. Often similar initiatives are developed in parallel with little or no contact with other Societies.
Proposal: Communication To Members by Staff - 2005
AEU actions need to be more transparent to its members. To make them so, more information on the process and products of the AEU needs to be provided in an ongoing and timely manner.
Proposal: Global Society by Staff - 2005
The Global Society is the virtual online Ethical Society for all Members-at-Large (MAL) who do not currently belong to an existing Ethical Society. The Global Society also serves as an online recruitment mechanism for growing Ethical Society membership. The web site is the access point to the Global Society services and materials.
Proposal: Governance by Staff - 2005
In order for the AEU to increase its utility and relevance to its member Societies, it must become more thoroughly representative of the Societies; enhance its ability to identify and provide supporting services and communications networks to the Societies; and develop or redefine institutional processes to ensure efficiency, accountability, and transparency.
Proposal: Planning Committee by Staff - 2005
The AEU has a recent history of developing plans that are never brought to fruition. A recent example would be the New Society Initiative. Typically, failures result not from malfeasance or ineptitude but from people with good intentions not considering all of the project’s ramifications, not knowing how to identify and overcome challenges during the process, and not opening up the process to the scrutiny and assistance of a wider audience.

Take the case of a man in business. We shall say that he is an intelligent man with reasonable moral sensibilities, has a family to which he is devoted, plays a moderately active role in certain areas of the public life of his community, enjoys a normal social life with his friends, and has a responsible position with a business firm but works below the top-policy-making level.

Everyone loves Monarch butterflies or, at the very least, knows what they look like or something about them. Thus, everyone should love a good book about Monarchs, and, this one certainly fills the bill. The author, Dr. Robert Michael Pyle ("Bob" to thousands of lepidopterists and conservationists) is both a renowned nature writer (Burroughs Medal for Wintergreen, 1986) and a highly trained and capable scientist (PhD, Yale University). He has also been, for decades, a leader in conservation causes.

My ultimate faith in the Ethical Movement and my hope for the future of religion in this world are founded on my associations with living men and women. Profound as the respect and reverence of any man must be for the religions of the past, I cannot stand in awe before them. But I am filled with the sense of wonder and awe in the presence of the spiritual nature as it manifests itself in the daily lives of men and women.

The Death of Real Religion by Joseph Chuman - date n.a.
In previous generations what one religiously believed made a difference. Religious devotees affirmed doctrines, articles of faith, and the ritual practices which they symbolized because they were comforting. But not merely comforting -- because they were true. Belief was the fabric of conscience and often inspired moral sacrifice and deeds of courage. Martin Luther's proclamation "Here I stand, I cannot do otherwise" has echoed through the ages as an example of the power of conscience to guide one's actions.

The Foundations of Our Belief by Henry J. Golding - 1926
To read the story of the world of humanity by the sole light of a single body of writings, however nobly inspired, is to shut out "the many-splendored thing," to blind oneself to the vistas opening before the advancing spirit of man. Moreover, the assumption of divine authority for any set of dogmas exalts assent above inquiry, uniformity above uniqueness or subordinates growth to prescription.
The Heroic Appeal of the Ethical Faith by Henry Neumann - 1926
. . . In discussing problems of moral education we sometimes have parents ask, "What is the sense of bringing up children on these finer principles? Will they not be unhappy in a world where most of their associates are content with the poorer and more common things?" The answer is, "Yes--again and again they will be unhappy. We must pay for every advance we make." If one grows more sensitive to good music, one grows at the same time more sensitive to noise. To heighten your love of beauty is likely to increase your awareness that what once satisfied you may be hideously unlovely.

The Possibilities of Human Nature by Jerome Nathanson - 1952
Human nature is wondrous in many ways, not the least of which are the ways in which it can think and talk about itself. It is good or evil, changing or unchanging, clean or corrupt, reasonable or emotional, promising or perverse, sacred or vile. With the shifting of the social winds and tides, each emphasis seems almost to be a matter of vogue, with now this virtue and now that vice in fashion. An objective mind might view this curious careening with amusement, if not with tolerance, were not such important issues at stake. But they are at stake--and what we think about what we are has more than a little to do with what we are to become.

To Love: To Work: To Hope by Matthew Ies Spetter - 2000 platform | love | work | hope | leader |
On this special Sunday I recall hearing Martin Luther King conclude one of his passionate sermons. He said that again and again people asked him: “How long? How long before the suffering will be over?” To that, Dr. King said, he always replied: “Not long–not long, if you believe that your labor too can speed the day.” Instead of false reassurance those were words of hope. For, as Erich Fromm wrote: “We labor for what we love, and we love that for which we labor.” Because of love, because of working for what we love, something becomes apparent in our lives. Work, makes love and hope visible. That is the theme I want to explore with you. For to be able to respect what we do with our lives, we need more than just collecting data and facts. We have
also to learn to see within, to gain insight, which is our every day’s spiritual challenge. To be human means to have the capacity for transformation ...

There are turning points in the lives of all of us.1 At such moments we confront the deeper questions from the stillness of our hearts. We may not even have been aware that we were so questioning ourselves and we have no answers ready. Those questions at the turning points are about what the realities of our lives actively are. We discover that we have been hungering for some purpose, some aim, beyond all rationalizations behind which we so often hide
ourselves from ourselves ...
