A few years ago a group of sociologists in California set out to measure what—as they put it—“matters most in people’s lives today.” In a book entitled Habits of the Heart, they wrote that the questions people came up with were very simple. Like: “How ought we to live?”: “Who are we?”: “What shall we teach our children?” In short, said the sociologists, what people are asking for is “How can I preserve a coherent life which makes sense to me?”
