Felix Adler Lifetime Achievement Award Presented to Dr. Howard B. Radest
The American Ethical Union presented the 2011 Felix Adler Lifetime Achievement Award to Dr. Howard B. Radest at a ceremony during the 96th AEU Assembly in June. The Felix Adler Award recognizes members who have stimulated the growth of the Ethical Culture Movement during many years of active participation in their Society, an AEU Affiliated Organization, and/or an AEU Committee or Board.
Dr. Howard B. Radest has been actively involved in the Ethical Culture Movement for over seven decades, during which time he has served as a Leader, educator, and author. He is Dean Emeritus of the Humanist Institute; a member of the National Leaders Council; and Board member of the North American Committee for Humanism. From 1979–1991, Dr. Radest served as Headmaster of the Ethical Culture Schools in Fieldston and Manhattan. From 1978–1988, he served as Co-Chair of the International Humanist and Ethical Union. From 1963–1969, he was Executive Director of the American Ethical Union, and from 1956–1963 served as Leader of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County.
Dr. Radest is a consulting member (Emeritus) of the South Carolina Medical Association Ethics Committee, and a consultant to the Center for Preparedness at the School of Public Health, University of South Carolina. He serves on the Advisory Committee of the Appignani Center for Bioethics, and is both a Senior Fellow of HIS and a Senior Fellow at the Center for Inquiry. Dr. Radest is also Board Chair of the Ethical Community Charter School, Jersey City, New Jersey.
From 1992–2008, Dr. Radest was Adjunct Professor of Philosophy at The University of South Carolina-Beaufort where he taught medical ethics, comparative religion, and social and political philosophy. From 1993–2008, Dr. Radest served as Ethics Consultant to Hilton Head Hospital where he was Chair of the Biomedical Ethics Committee. From 1970–1979, he was Professor of Philosophy and Director of the School of American Studies at Ramapo College in New Jersey. Dr. Radest was the founder and first Chair of the seminar, "On Moral Education" at Columbia University.
Dr. Radest's book publications include: Toward Common Ground (Ungar, 1968), a history of the Ethical Culture movement in the United States; Can We Teach Ethics? (Praeger, 1989); The Devil and Secular Humanism (Praeger, 1990); Humanism with a Human Face (Praeger, 1996); and, Felix Adler: An Ethical Culture (Peter Lang, 1998). He serves on the editorial boards of The Humanist and Religious Humanism.
Dr. Radest received his B.A. from Columbia College; an M.A. in Philosophy and Psychology from the New School for Social Research; and his Ph.D. in Philosophy from Columbia University. In addition, Dr. Radest received the Distinguished Service Award of the Humanist Institute (1994), the Distinguished Service Award of the American Humanist Association (1993), and the Kuhmerker Award of the Moral Education Association (1988). At different times, Dr. Radest has been both a Cornell Scholar and a Hillman Scholar.
