Happy Birthday to BSEC, BES, and EHST!
The Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture (BSEC) threw a big birthday party on March 25 to celebrate its 105th anniversary. Members and friends of the Society ate a lovely potluck lunch, played games, and sang "Happy Birthday." According to Howard Radest, in his book "Toward Common Ground," BSEC was founded in 1905 by Ralph Jonas a prominent well-connected Brooklyn Attorney who attended the New York Society for Ethical Culture and was an admirer of Felix Adler. Public meetings began in December of 1905 and BSEC was officially incorporated on March 30th 1907.
The Baltimore Ethical Society (BES) commemorated their 60th anniversary on April 21 (Society was incorporated April 21, 1952) and April 22. Festivities began with an elegant dinner at the Octagon in the Mt. Washington Conference Center. The night's entertainment included a silent action, musicians, and inspiring words from former and current Leaders. The following day included a platform titled "Memories and Reflections" and an art exhibit, held in the Bob Corbett BES meeting space, with pieces from Leader Emeritus Fritz Williams' children stories and watercolors from Susie Ketzis, BES member and current music director. The weekend celebration concluded with a glimpse into one of Ethical Culture's true heroines Jane Addams as part of Leader Hugh Taft-Morales' Great Thinkers Discussion Series.
On May 20, the Ethical Humanist Society of the Triangle (EHST) will celebrate the 25th anniversary of their incorporation as an Ethical Culture Society in 1987. Leader Randy Best will begin the program with a Dedication to EHST. Ina Evans, one of the founding members, will speak to her role in establishing the Society and the historical path it has followed since inception in fostering its commitment to ethical education, social justice, and equality for all. Last and equally important is the presentation of a new mission statement for member consideration and vote, developed from the contributions all members have made by responding to several surveys and writing content.
Congratulations to BSEC, BES, and EHST on their exciting milestones. Cheers to many more years and celebrations to come.
