Barbara Levenson (
New York) – Beloved friend and New York Society for Ethical Culture (NYSEC) member Barbara Levenson died on May 12. She was awarded a PhD in Sociology from Columbia University and for many years conducted research at Columbia University's Sociology Department and its Public Health Department. In the 1970s, Barbara and her husband Bernie moved to Baltimore where she directed research for the Social Security Administration. When she retired, they returned to New York City. After Bernie's death, Barbara sought both comfort and purpose at NYSEC and soon became an active member. She was a driving force on every committee she joined, from Membership and Sunday Programs to Ethical Enrichment, and served on the Board of Trustees. She generated new programs and worked tirelessly to support others. She will be dearly missed.
Dusty Cohn (
Westchester) - Dusty Cohn had a long and rich life to the age of 93; she loved being a copy writer, she loved her family, she loved teaching. She was a devoted member (and former President) of the Ethical Culture Society of Westchester along with her late husband, Harry. Her life was devoted to politics, women's rights, and she adored bridge, even if sometimes she applied her own rules! She was outspoken, vociferous in her beliefs and consistent in expressing her opinions. For many years Dusty hosted pot-luck suppers in her home, always featuring her chili casserole. She was a mighty good proof reader for years of The Page, our newsletter. She and Harry had two children, Dan and Maggie. She moved to be near Maggie in Massachusetts in an independent living home the last two years of her life.
Phyllis Miller (
Chicago) – Longtime member and a former President of the Ethical Humanist Society of Chicago, Phyllis Miller died on June 10th at the age of 83. Phyllis grew up in western Pennsylvania and worked many years as a librarian in Evanston. She loved to sing and was an avid environmentalist. She and her husband Mack funded the Society's Miller Library. Our condolences to her daughters, Hilary and Alice.
