Dedicated Volunteers Honored with Anna Garlin Spencer Award

Amongst business meetings, workshops, lectures, and discussions, the American Ethical Union took time during the 97th Assembly to recognize the endless hours of service performed by Society members. These dedicated volunteers have provided their local Society and the Ethical Culture Movement with programs, events, supplies, monetary commitments, their energy, and most importantly, compassion for their fellow members and the values we share. Each of the nine recipients below was presented with the Anna Garlin Spencer Volunteer Award by representatives from the nominating congregation who shared why the recipient deserved the award. Born in 1851, Anna Garlin Spencer was a social activist and feminist icon. She was the first woman ordained to preach in Rhode Island, became a founder of the NAACP, promoted child labor laws, and worked for equal rights for women. She was the first woman Ethical Culture Leader and her life-long work embodies the spirit intended by this award.
