Group supports union workers

To the editor,

As a humanist congregation, the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County is committed to social action, especially in support of civil and human rights. Our Board of Trustees, alarmed by Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker's attacks on his state's unions encourages everyone to support the rights of union workers there and wherever they are under attack across the country.

Recently, we passed a formal resolution of support in which we charge that the governor's actions make a mockery of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights provision which states that "Everyone has the right to form and to join trade unions for the protection of his interests." The resolution also states our belief that Governor Walker has deliberately reduced taxes on those most able to pay in order to create an excuse to deprive the states' union workers of their rights.

The resolution which can be viewed on the organization's website, ethicalfocus.org, has been sent to Governor Walker and also to Governor Christie who has been scapegoating union workers here in New Jersey. We see our resolution as an extension of our Society's history of social action locally in support of human rights, including working for fair housing, against both homelessness and the death penalty and towards a more peaceful world.
