Letter from the Ethical Culture Society of Suffolk County Challenges Five Supreme Court Judges

Ethical Culture Society of Suffolk County
Smithtown,  N.Y., 11787

November 14, 2010

Dear Justices Roberts, Alito, Kennedy, Scalia and Thomas:

At a meeting of our Society on November 14, 2010 the members present unanimously agreed that I should relay this message to you regarding the wildly activist and, in the opinion of many, infamous decision of January 21, 2009 in the case of Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, in which you outrageously broadened the scope of the case and, in effect, generously handed the electoral process over to the highest bidder.

Setting aside the obfuscations in defense of your decision, any reasonable person reading the Preamble to the United States Constitution would find it difficult if not impossible to make the activist and unwarranted leap from "We the People" seeking Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness to, "We the Corporations in Pursuit of the Megabuck."

We say that your decision in this case is a threat to real Persons and their Democratic institutions, is Constitutionally and ethically indefensible, and is worthy of no less than impeachment. Similar sentiments have been expressed by sister Ethical Culture societies as well as many citizens, including constitutional experts, who feel that this decision deals a major blow to our waning democratic institutions.

With deep regret over your morally indefensible decision,

The Members of the Ethical Society of Suffolk County, N.Y.
