WHEREAS the American Ethical Union believes in the worth and dignity of all men, and supports all peaceful efforts by racial minorities to win the proper respect and status; and

WHEREAS the American Ethical Union believes that discrimination against minorities runs counter to the historic spirit and the law of the land as embodied in our Constitution; and

WHEREAS the American Ethical Union regards the refusal of service in public dining rooms as an offense to human dignity and as a denial of one of the simplest rights of first class citizenship to full Americans;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the American Ethical Union express its understanding and sympathy for the current Negro "sitdown" movement in the South as a firm and peaceful expression of just and righteous indignation, and as a protest against those local laws and customs which degrade the individual and set at naught the democracy which is basic in our national ideals; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the American Ethical Union urges its members to support, encourage or initiate citizen activity and community efforts which challenge segregation in all its forms, and which have as their goal a non-segregated society.
