HOUSE UN-AMERICAN ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE REQUESTED TO LIMIT ITS SCOPE SO AS TO AVOID IMPROPER PRACTICES WHEREAS the Un-American Activities Committee of the House of Representatives has engaged in "trial by publicity" and "guilt by association"; and has repeatedly overstepped its function as an investigative instrument of the Legislature; WHEREAS such abuses have to date overshadowed and outweighed the Committee's contributions in the formulation of legislation; WHEREAS enforcement of the laws concerning security of this country belong within the realm of the Judiciary and Executive and not of the Legislative arm of Government and can be better and more justly dealt with by such organs as the Department of Justice and the Courts; BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the American Ethical Union, a federation of all Ethical Culture Societies in the United States, meeting in Annual Assembly in St. Louis, Missouri, request that the House of Representatives give serious and immediate consideration to curbing abuses.
