WHEREAS the President of the United States has stated that one-fifth of all American families have resources inadequate to meet their basic needs;
WHEREAS the blight of poverty is most keenly felt by members of unskilled minority groups, workers displaced by automation, the aged migrant workers, and the residents of chronically depressed areas;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the American Ethical Union declares poverty ethically intolerable in an affluent nation; and
BE IT RESOLVED that we support the concept of government attack on poverty and urge federal legislation and adequate appropriations to accomplish that objective; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we urge the government to act promptly on the basis of the vast accumulation of knowledge and data on this subject.
