1971: THE WAR IN SOUTHEAST ASIA June 1971

THE WAR IN SOUTHEAST ASIA

WHEREAS, the people and lands of Southeast Asia have been suffering the ravages of warfare for the past thirty years; and the war still continues to bring death and suffering to many people and destruction to the land; and

WHEREAS, United States forces have been conducting hostilities in Southeast Asia for over ten years; and

WHEREAS, in the past year the United States forces have greatly increased their bombing of Laos and extended the war to Cambodia; and

WHEREAS, recent withdrawals of some of the United States ground forces have been accompanied by an expansion of the scope and intensity of United States air attacks; and

WHEREAS, the war has produced in some Americans the sort of contempt for human life which made possible the commission of atrocities such as the My Lai massacre and the use of mutation-producing defoliants; and

WHEREAS, American involvement in the war is not justified by any military threat to the United States;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the 1971 Assembly of the American Ethical Union, reaffirm the position of earlier AEU Assemblies, to call upon the President of the United States to order immediately a cessation of all air, naval and land attacks in Southeast Asia and immediately set a date of no later than December 31 when all United States armed forces will have been withdrawn from the area; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we call upon the Congress of the United States immediately to withhold all funds for military operations in Southeast Asia except for the actual withdrawal of troops; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we call upon our government to honor the Geneva Agreement not to supply weapons to any of the hostile parties in Southeast Asia and to persuade all other nations to honor similarly this Agreement; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we call upon the people of the United States to exert every influence on our government to bring about an immediate end to American military involvement in Southeast Asia.
