WHEREAS, the still-experimental nature of nuclear power contains potential for accidents causing serious damage to life and property; WHEREAS, the transportation of nuclear materials is subject to unforeseeable and uncontrollable conditions threatening great hazard to life and the environment; WHEREAS, the storage of nuclear waste, requiring virtually perpetual surveillance, is a critical unsolved problem of enormous peril; THEREFORE, The American Ethical Union calls upon all government agencies concerned in any way whatsoever with nuclear energy, to declare a moratorium on all further licensing and construction of nuclear reactors. TO substantially reduce the further accumulation of nuclear waste pending a permanent storage solution; TO formulate and strictly enforce regulations governing, and routes of travel for, the safe transportation of all nuclear materials; TO increase research into nuclear technology stressing human and environmental safety as an urgent and primary goal; TO vastly expand research into and utilization of solar, geothermal, wind, and other ecologially acceptable sources of energy.
