1975: NUCLEAR ENERGY RISKS 67th NATIONAL ASSEMBLY - APRIL 1975

NUCLEAR ENERGY RISKS

WHEREAS, the still-experimental nature of nuclear power contains potential for accidents causing serious damage to life and property;

WHEREAS, the transportation of nuclear materials is subject to unforeseeable and uncontrollable conditions threatening great hazard to life and the environment;

WHEREAS, the storage of nuclear waste, requiring virtually perpetual surveillance, is a critical unsolved problem of enormous peril;

THEREFORE, The American Ethical Union calls upon all government agencies concerned in any way whatsoever with nuclear energy, to declare a moratorium on all further licensing and construction of nuclear reactors.

TO substantially reduce the further accumulation of nuclear waste pending a permanent storage solution;

TO formulate and strictly enforce regulations governing, and routes of travel for, the safe transportation of all nuclear materials;

TO increase research into nuclear technology stressing human and environmental safety as an urgent and primary goal;

TO vastly expand research into and utilization of solar, geothermal, wind, and other ecologially acceptable sources of energy.

Submitted by the Cleveland Ethical Society
Approved by the AEU Public Affairs Committee
Adopted by the AEU Assembly, Westbury, N, Y. - 1975.
