WHEREAS, an uncontrolled nuclear arms race may end in a nuclear holocaust, and

WHEREAS, the United States and the Soviet Union have been negotiating Strategic Arms ~Limitation Treaty II for six years, and it will soon be presented to the Senate, and

WHEREAS, SALT II levels off the strategic arms race by numerical and qualitative restrictions, with sound verification arrangements, and

WHEREAS, SALT II lays the groundwork for more meaningful restrictions in a SALT III Treaty,

THEREFORE, be it resolved that:

The American Ethical Union urges the United States Senate to:

1. Vote for ratification of SALT II, as a necessary step to continue the arms control process, and
2. Work for a freeze on further testing, deployment/and production of nuclear weapons and systems, to stop the arms race at the present level,
