The American Ethical Union expresses its alarm and disapproval at the deep cuts in social programs proposed in the First Budget Resolution. As an organization which stands for a compassionate approach to the needs of lowincome people, and for the limitation of armaments, the American Ethical Union believes that the Budget Resolution is a shocking example of misplaced priorities. We urge that before putting the budget in final form, the Congress closely scrutinize the $80 billion increase in military spending proposed for the next two years, and seek reductions which can be applied to preserve social programs of proven value. We further urge that there be no general reduction in tax rates unless accompanied by steps to close tax loopholes, and additionally that any reductions be graded to favor those in the lower income brackets. Adopted by the American Ethical Union Assembly in Madison, New Jersey, 1981
