1981: HALT THE NUCLEAR ARMS RACE
1981 - 73rd NATIONAL AEU ASSEMBLY
CALL FOR A HALT TO THE NUCLEAR ARMS RACE
The American Ethical Union reaffirms its belief that a nuclear war would destroy civilization and life on this planet as we know it. We view with horror the re-escalation of the nuclear arms race which we believe will not contribute to peace but only create a hair-trigger on nuclear war.
We believe that to improve national and international security, the United States and the Soviet Union should stop the nuclear arms race. Specifically, they should adopt a mutual freeze on the testing,. production and deployment of nuclear weapons and of missiles and new aircraft .designed primarily to deliver nuclear weapons. This is an essential, verifiable first step toward lessening the risk of nuclear war and reducing the nuclear arsenals.
Adopted by the American Ethical Union Assembly in Madison, New Jersey, 1981
