SUPPORT OF A CONGRESSIONAL QUICK FREEZE

BECAUSE of the escalation of the nuclear arms race, including the development of first-strike nuclear weapons and the threat to put weapons into space;

BECAUSE of the increasing danger of a nuclear war, the impossibility of defending against nuclear war, and because there can be no winner of a nuclear war;

BECAUSE the mutual, bilateral nuclear weapons freeze is a clear, common sense approach to stopping the nuclear arms race as a first step towards preventing and reducing the threat of nuclear war;

BECAUSE the President has failed to reach an arms control agreement with the Soviet Union;

IN THE INTEREST OF NATIONAL SECURITY, BE IT RESOLVED THAT:

American Ethical Union

Calls upon the Congress of the United States to suspend funding for the testing of nuclear warheads and the testing and deployment of new nuclear ballistic missiles and anti-satellite weapons (which are presently verifiable by national means) as long as the Soviet Union does the same thing.

the current drive.
