1984 - 76th NATIONAL AEU ASSEMBLY

UNITED STATES INVOLVEMENT IN CENTRAL AMERICA

WHEREAS, The United States Government has greatly increased its military involvement in Central America and the Caribbean by:

    Invading Grenada,
    Aiding the repressive regime in El Salvador's civil war,
    Conducting maneuvers with thousands of combat troops,
    Establishing a permanent military base in Honduras,
    Mining the harbors and directing land, sea and
    air attacks against Nicaragua, and

WHEREAS, We are coming closer to direct American military intervention, and

WHEREAS, "Gunboat diplomacy" cannot deal with the causes of crisis in the region -- poverty and repression, and

WHEREAS, The United States is trying to by-pass the World Court,

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED:

    The American Ethical Union calls for an end to all military aid and intervention in Central America by the United States, and
    The American Ethical Union supports negotiated settlements and removal of all foreign military bases, as proposed by the Contadoro countries.
