WHEREAS, the combination of sharply increased military spending and reduced tax rates has caused deficits, which threaten to undermine the economy of the United States and the world, and
WHEREAS, domestic and social programs essential to the human needs of the American people have been substantially reduced during the past four years, and are again slated for massive cutbacks or elimination, and
WHEREAS, we can safely cut the military budget if we freeze the arms race, stop arming for foreign intervention and reduce Pentagon waste, and
WHEREAS,.true national security only comes from a rational defense policy combined with a concern for domestic well-being,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT:
The American Ethical Union calls upon Congress to deal with the deficit, not by cutting non-defense programs, but by a program of reduced military spending and tax reform based on ability to pay and elimination of special privilege.
