FAMILY PLANNING AND ABORTION WHEREAS, family planning services that frequently eliminate the need for abortions have largely been made available through our nation-wide network of family planning programs, and WHEREAS, these family planning programs rely heavily on Congressionally allocated federal funds, and WHEREAS, the withholding of these funds threatens the continuation of these sorely needed services, denies the intent of the Congress in having allocated these funds and contravenes the 1973 Supreme Court Decision legalizing abortion. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT: The American Ethical Union demands that existing allocations of federal monies continue uninterrupted, thereby ensuring the on-going availability of medical and educational services now administered by our family planning programs, including, but not limited to, abortion services. The American Ethical Union deplores any and all attempts to restrict, curtail or otherwise interfere with the right of women to choose to have, or not to have, an abortion as a matter of individual conscience. Adopted by the American Ethical Union Assembly at the Philadelphia Society, Philadelphia Pennsylvania, 1985.
