SOUTH AFRICA - APARTHEID WHEREAS, the apartheid system in force in South Africa is unethical and immoral, because it denies the basic humanity of the vast majority of that nation's people, and WHEREAS, South Africa has repeatedly defied world opinion on this issue, and WHEREAS, the United States government has frequently acted as an apologist for the government of South Africa, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT: the American Ethical Union urge its members to instruct their investment committees to divest themselves in the course of the next twelve months of holdings in corporations with operations and interests in South Africa, including funds with shares in such enterprises and, of course,, to refrain from making further investments in such corporations of funds until apartheid has been eliminated; and the American Ethical Union urge the government of the United States to use diplomatic and economic leverage in opposition to apartheid, including:
