1987: SANCTIONS AGAINST SOUTH AFRICA 1987 - 79th NATIONAL AEU ASSEMBLY

SANCTIONS AGAINST SOUTH AFRICA

WHEREAS, the Government of South Africa has continued to defy world opinion by maintaining the cruel and oppressive system of apartheid, and

WHEREAS, in the past year, this minority, racist government has increased its oppression of the non-white majority and of white dissenters by stifling freedom of speech, by arbitrary arrests, by imprisoning, torturing and killing opponents of the regime, and

WHEREAS, the previous efforts at reaching a peaceful solution by all the arts of compromise and conciliation, by moderate penalties by the so-called "constructive engagement policy" and the Sullivan Principles have failed, and

WHEREAS, according to the latest poll, seventy percent of the Blacks of South Africa favor divestment, regardless of any hardships they may incur,

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT:

The American Ethical Union urges the Government of the United States to break all military ties and to embargo trade and to forbid new loans to the Government of South Africa, and the American Ethical Union urges all United States Corporations and Public Institutions to divest of all investments in South Africa.

Adopted by the American Ethical Union Assembly in Riverdale, New York; 1987.
