1989: GRAPE BOYCOTT 1989 - 81st NATIONAL AEU ASSEMBLY

GRAPE BOYCOTT

WHEREAS, Since 1984, the United Farm Workers Union has sponsored a boycott of California table grapes until the use of five pesticides (namely captan, methyl bromide, dinoseb, parathion, and phosdrin) that are a danger to the health of farm workers, their families, and the consuming public is halted, and

WHEREAS, This boycott has been endorsed by many nationally known leaders of consumer and antipoverty groups, as well as other well-known figures, such as Ralph Nader, Mitch Snyder, Jesse Jackson, actors Martin Sheen and Edward James Olmos, and the Reverend Joseph Lowery head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and

WHEREAS, There have been documented abnormally high instances of deaths, cancers, and birth defects in the agricultural villages of the grape-growing regions of California,

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT:

The American Ethical Union endorses the boycott and strongly urges its members and the general public to discontinue using California table grapes until the use of these dangerous pesticides is stopped.
