American Ethical Union, meeting on April 18, 1998.
WHEREAS, the Mexican Government has engaged in a full and prolonged military occupation
of the State of Chiapas for the past four years, and

and has at times intimidated that population, and
WHEREAS, the United States Government has supplied considerable military aid to the Mexican army,
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT:
we, the National Leaders Council and the Board of Directors of the American Ethical Union, do
hereby petition our federal government to:
A) Make the human rights of Chiapans a major priority in our relations with Mexico,
B) Ask the Mexican Government to change its policy of military occupation of Chiapas
and find more humane methods of peace keeping;
C) Withhold military assistance to the Mexican army unless the Mexican Government
changes its policy of military occupation.
