WHAT TO DO AFTER YOU SAY HELLO?

Guidelines for everyone

Source: Washington Ethical Society in about 1995

A common complaint is that we are a cold group of people who are hard to get to know.

Newcomers believe we may be a closed group and don't realize that many members also feel like outsiders. The purpose of these guidelines is to make ourselves more conscious of our need to reach out to people we do not already know. All members of the Society who are not averse to speaking to new people should consider themselves greeters.

  1. Welcome all who come to the Sunday platform meeting.
  2. Direct newcomers to the mailing list book, to the name tag tables, and literature.
  3. Tell newcomers of your interest and involvement in WES.
  4. Ask if they have any questions or what brings them to the Society.
  5. Invite newcomers to the Newcomers Evening. The date is posted on the name tag table.
  6. Extend personal invitations to newcomers to WES functions such as committee meetings, book discussions, etc. A calendar is posted on the bulletin board.
  7. Speak to newcomers after the meeting. Share your reaction to the morning with them.
  8. Introduce new members to long-time members.
  9. Always introduce newcomers to someone else. Even members need to be introduced to members.
