Mariama Richards spoke on December 13, 2015 at the New York Society for Ethical Culture about “Racial Literacy in Schools.”
Are children colorblind? Is nine years old too young to discuss race? How do students understand concepts about race and ethnicity? Last year Ethical Culture Fieldston School launched Conversations About Race for 3-5th grade students. This program was created in order to provide opportunities to discuss race and racial identity in affinity group settings. This talk will review the research and thinking that prompted its creation.
Mariama Richards serves as the Director of Progressive and Multicultural Education at Ethical Culture Fieldston School.
