1986 – Separation Of Church And State
Submitted to and passed at the AEU 78th Assembly
Whereas the separation of church and state is a guarantee of our Bill of Rights, insuring us against the establishment of religion and guaranteeing us its free exercise,
Whereas aggressive and persistent inroads are being made on this principle in such ways as the following:
- By attempting to impose school prayer on the nation’s students, as invasion of the individuals right to be free from government-imposed practice of religion, and
- By attempting to enact Tuition Tax Credits, voucher schemes and other ways to funnel public money to private/religious schools,
- By supporting the use of government funds and land for erection of religious holiday symbols,
Therefore Be It Resolved that the American Ethical Union go on record as opposing all efforts to breach the wall of separation between church and state.
