Will Attorney General serve all Americans?
The American Ethical Union has long supported civil rights, women’s rights, LGBTQ+ rights, criminal justice reform, and immigrant rights. We also have an extensive record condemning the use of torture. Therefore we urge all members of the American Ethical Union to only support the confirmation of an Attorney General who will serve and uphold the rights of all Americans, and tell their Senators to oppose any nominee who does not. Members whose senators serve on the Committee are especially encouraged to contact their senators.
Use https://www.govtrack.us/congress/members/map to find your representatives and their contact information. Write to and/or call your Senators to inform them of how Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions and his record influences your opinion of how he will handle the position of Attorney General of the United States. Examples may be:
– Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions was turned down years ago for a judgeship by the nomination process in the Senate, for his racial bias. He has opposed special education, women’s rights, hate crime legislation, and LGBTQ+ rights. We need an Attorney General who is for human rights and all citizens, not just some of them.
– Jeff Sessions’ three-decade record of outspoken opposition to laws that protect the rights of all Americans is unambiguous, perhaps most notably including the voting rights of the African American citizens of his home state of Alabama, who have endured a long history of assaults on and outright deprivation of those rights.
– Senator Jeff Sessions supports the use of torture, contrary to international law, and favors restrictions on legal immigration, which would give the lie to this country’s being a beacon of freedom and opportunity. His antipathy to dissent indicates that he would not strongly protect our First Amendment rights.
