Free Exercise Frenzy: The Shark Devouring the Establishment Clause

Lori Lipman Brown will be the final speaker in the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County five-week speaker series: Is Separation of Church & State Coming to an End? This series, co-sponsored by The Puffin Foundation, is a response to recent attacks on a fundamental, constitutional principle at the heart of American democracy. Brown will discuss recent judicial and legislative actions that increase religion’s influence on civil law, served as the first director of the Secular Coalition for America (2005-2009) and is on its board of directors. She is the author of a chapter in 50 Voices of Disbelief, Why We Are Atheists and is quoted extensively in American Secularism, Cultural Contours of Nonreligious Belief Systems. A former lawyer and educator, Brown served in the Nevada State Senate. Her work on LGBTQ issues is included in Dennis McBride’s 2016 text, Out of the Neon Closet, Queer Community in the Silver State. Brown earned a juris doctor degree from Southwestern University School of Law and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
