1971 – Equal Rights
Submitted to and Passed by the AEU 63rd Assembly
Whereas, the American Ethical Union has always affirmed the dignity, worth, and equal rights of all human beings; and
Whereas, many groups of people in our country, including women, blacks, Puerto Ricans, Chicanos, the foreign-born, and the American Indians, have been denied equal rights both by law and by customary practice;
Therefore Be It Resolved, that the American Ethical Union supports the efforts of such groups to achieve equal rights and opportunities in all aspects of life, and opposes attempts to perpetuate the inequities which continue to oppress people in American society; and in particular
Be It Resolved, that the Legislative and Executive branches of the United States government are urged to enact and vigorously enforce laws requiring equal opportunity in employment and education regardless of race or sex to adhere strictly to their obligations under all treaties with the American Indians, and to extend the protection of the National Labor Relations Act to farm workers.
