1949 – AEU Endorses UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Submitted to and Passed by AEU Assembly, which convened in Brooklyn, NY

Whereas, the General Assembly of the United Nations, meeting in Paris adopted, on December 10, 1948 a Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and

Whereas, the American Ethical Union is dedicated to further such human rights as are set forth in this Declaration,

Be it Therefore Resolved, that the American Ethical Union at this Assembly endorse the declaration and that the AEU urgently recommend to the government of the United States that it lend its full support to and ratify an International Covenant incorporating and implementing the basic human rights set forth in the Declaration;

Be it Therefore Resolved, that the American Ethical Union do whatever is in its power to publicize the Declaration and to assure, whenever possible, that the rights contained therein are observed in this country;

Be it Therefore Resolved, that where such rights do not exist or are not enforced in the United States that public attention be drawn to such lack or violation and that the American Ethical Union study and recommend remedial measures or proper enforcement of rights where such rights are not fully safeguarded.
