Submitted by the Ethical Humanist Society of Chicago and Passed by AEU
Whereas the conscience of mankind was shocked by the recent revivals of the ancient crime of mass extermination for national, racial, or religious reasons; and
Whereas the United Nations has unanimously adopted a Genocide Convention which makes it an international crime to kill “with the intent of exterminating, in whole or in part, a national, ethical, racial or religious group;” and
Whereas the Senate of the United States has the Genocide Convention before it for ratification,
Therefore: be it resolved that the American Ethical Union favors the ratification of the Genocide Convention in its present form and without reservations even though many technical questions of sovereignty and Constitutional practice have to be resolved, and the American Ethical Union also calls upon individuals, newspapers, churches, and other interested bodies to join with it in asking for the ratification of the Genocide Convention.
