Part of the Is Separation of Church & State Coming to an End speaker series brought to you by the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County and the Puffin Foundation is guest speaker Dan Barker. Dan is co-president of the Freedom From Religion Foundation, co-host of Freethought Radio, co-host of Freethought Matters (TV), and co-founder, with philosopher Daniel C. Dennett, and scientist Richard Dawkins, of The Clergy Project.
Dan became an evangelist at age 15. He has a degree in religion from Azusa Pacific University and was ordained to the ministry by the Standard Community Church, California. He served as associate pastor in three California churches: Arcadia Friends Church (Quaker), Glengrove Assembly of God (Hacienda Heights), and Standard Christian Center, an independent Charismatic church loosely affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ tradition) in Standard, California.
He was a Christian songwriter and a missionary in Mexico, and he maintained an ongoing touring musical ministry, including eight years of cross-country evangelism. After four to five years of re-evaluation, he announced his atheism publicly in January, 1984. He tells his story in the books “Losing Faith in Faith” (1992) and “Godless: How an Evangelical Preacher Became One of America’s Leading Atheists” (2008).
