Submitted to the AEU 77th Assembly
Whereas acid rain causes $5 billion a year damage in the eastern United States alone, according to the National Academy of Sciences, and
Whereas pesticides banned in the United States as carcinogenic are exported and used on crops which then are sold in this country, and
Whereas there are more than 20,000 chemically contaminated sites in the nation, some threatening public drinking water supplies, and
Whereas new chemicals come on the market without adequate testing of possible harmful effects on workers producing then, or on consumers generally,
Therefore Be It Resolved that:
The American Ethical Union calls upon the Congress to expand and strengthen legislation regulating hazardous chemicals, toxic waste, acid rain, and water and air pollution, and to provide sufficient funds to environmental protection agencies to enforce such legislation vigorously.
