1991 – Reproductive Rights

10 Feb 1991
Jake Ritter
Resolutions

Submitted By the Ethical Humanist Society of Chicago, Adopted by Region V Assembly in (June) 1990, Adopted by AEU Board in (February 9) 1991

Whereas the ultimate decision to terminate a pregnancy under the rights established by Roe v. Wade decision must be the sole responsibility of the woman, with the advice of her physician, and

Whereas it is an erosion of civil liberties for each state legislature to have the authority to deny women free choice on a very personal decision regarding their own reproductive functions,

Therefore Be It Resolved that the American Ethical Union urges Congress to restore national protection for women to be free to make their own decisions on abortion regardless of where in the United States they may live.

Proposed Actions and Measures of Effectiveness (Adopted by AEU Board in February 9, 1991):

1. Letter writing to U.S. Senators and Representatives;

2. Send copies of resolution to U.S. Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Subcommittee on Civil and Constitutional Rights, and the House Select Committee on Children, Youth, and Families, as well as to the abortion rights coalition of which the AEU is affiliated, and to the National Organization of Women, and to the National Abortion Rights Action League;

3. Abortion remains the right of the pregnant woman to decide and to obtain without legal and/or financial restrictions.
