Ethical Culture Leader Hugh Taft-Morales led a presentation on Thursday, April 21 about “Godless Spirituality” at the 18th Ignite Baltimore in the MICA auditorium. Ignite Baltimore brings 16 speakers on stage for five minutes each to share their questions, vision, stories, and personality “to spark new conversation and collaborations across cultures and disciplines.”

Hugh encourages us each to nurture our own form of godless spirituality with “the steady legs of science, the wings of imagination, and outstretched helping hands.” He explained (in a newsletter article) that Adler used the term ‘spiritual’ “not to imply the existence of supernatural entities like god, angels, or ghosts, but because it provided him existential energy–it enhanced his commitment and capacity to live a more fully engaged, meaningful, and responsible life. While he often said that he would use the term ‘spiritual’ just as he would use the term ‘ethical,’ it is clear that for him spirituality implied a deeper, more emotional experience.”
