Mary Herman, Leader, spoke on October 20, 2013 at the Washington Ethical Society about “Human Rights, Conflict, and Reconciliation.”

For thousands of years, humanity has been engaged in a great social experiment testing the hypothesis that we could prevent violence by ordering people not to engage in it; and then, when they commit acts of violence anyway, retaliating with more violence of our own–which we call justice. Through stories and also inspirational views by Nobel Peace Laureates, Mary Herman, Leader for Congregational Life, will explore the conflicts that arise when basic human rights are denied, and the practical possibility of achieving reconciliation.
