Protecting Our Democracy and the 2020 Presidential Election

Posted on 02 Nov 2020

James Croft, Leader of the Ethical Society of St. Louis and guests spoke on November 1, 2020 about “Protecting Our Democracy and the 2020 Presidential Election.” The Zoom platform was sponsored by American Ethical Union’s Ethical Action Committee. What will Ethical Societies, as communities committed to democracy, do if the president refuses to honor the results of the election? How might we make our voices heard? Learn how democracy is central to Ethical Humanism, and how you can act to protect our democracy should the worst occur. In a lively pre-election gathering, we made commitments to take action to ensure that all votes are counted, and the results of the election are honored. Come take action with us:

  • If you are willing to write or call state election officials to demand they oversee a free and fair election, connect with Protect Our Election. You just have to fill in your details – name, email, and zip code – and you can immediately be patched through to the right person: they even give you text for your letter and a script for your call, in case you don’t know what to say.
  • If you are willing to go to the polls to ensure that voter intimidation or suppression does not occur, connect with Election Defenders. They are looking for people who wish to be present at polling places on election day to document and de-escalate any intimidation which might occur. By signing up with Election Defenders, you will be plugged into opportunities to defend the election in the coming weeks.
  • If you are willing to take to the streets in the result that all the votes are not counted, or the legitimate results of the election are not respected, connect with Protect the Results. You will be taken to a site where you can find local events near you. There are events all over the country, and you can sign up to be involved. All you have to do is select an event in your area, RSVP, and turn up.
