AEU Fights to Replace Hate with Respect

13 Aug 2017
Jake Ritter
Statements

The terrorism and intimidation inflicted on Charlottesville, VA (and the threat of more violence to come soon) by white supremacists is a tangible reminder of the justice work that remains in our hands. Let this tragic expression of hate spur us to work even more fervently for justice, peace and inclusion. Let us continue learning and teaching about systemic racism to everyone we know. Let us be involved even more deeply in our communities to root out hatred by replacing it with love and respect for each others’ dignity as human beings. Let us find ways to communicate to White supremacists that oppressing others will not lead them to the goals they desire: security, freedom, stability in employment. Let us counter the worst with our best and build a world where everyone’s dignity is realized.

Throughout our history, we have passed resolutions to condemn and prevent such violence, oppose all forms of racial discrimination, support equal rights, and encourage all to fight systemic racism. Our Ethical Societies continue to develop programs and resources to support racial justice and welcome all to join them in local efforts.

Thank you to all the individuals and groups who stand up for love, respect, and justice. Here are ways we can take action together:

  • Create and join safe environments filled with respect and support
  • Donate to Medical Fund for Charlottesville Victims, Black Lives Matter Charlottesville, University of Virginia Black Student Alliance, Legal Aid Justice Center
  • Tell Congress and the President that they need to take action to stop the violence
  • Use Southern Poverty Law Center’s “Ten Ways to Fight Hate” Guide
