For the Ethical Humanist Society of Rochester’s July meeting, special guest Kit Miller will speak about “Nonviolent Communication” – an approach to communication based on general principles of nonviolence that is intended to increase empathy and improve quality of life. Kit is a native Rochesterian who grew up in Irondequoit experiencing some violence at home. She began studying nonviolent communication 30 years ago after the birth of her second child. Kit worked with Marshall Rosenberg, a leader of the Nonviolent Communication movement, on numerous projects, including on the Center for Nonviolent Communication board from 1999 to 2004, and as director/celebrator of Bay Area Nonviolent Communication in Oakland, California from 2004-2009. She served as director of the MK Gandhi Institute in Rochester from 2009 until she stepped down in 2021. During that time, Kit greatly expanded the activities and impact of the Gandhi Institute. She recently completed a book on applying nonviolence to organizations and groups.
Here is a link to a 9-minute video of Marshall Rosenberg introducing Nonviolent Communication. Kit asks that you watch the video and reflect on what in the video you find inspiring or challenging. We look forward to a provocative discussion.
*Note: This will be a Zoom-only meeting.
We hope to see you there and please don’t forget to RSVP.
