EHSR Should We Patronize Artists Who Have Behaved Badly?

November 2, 2022 | 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

The topic the Ethical Humanist Society of Rochester’s November meeting “Should we patronize artists who have behaved badly?” The list of artists – including actors, directors, writers, composers, etc. – who have been credibly accused of serious misconduct is long. You might find yourself wondering whether you should watch their movies or listen to their music, and you might ask whether your assessment of their work should be affected by their behavior. Here’s a link to one article that addresses the topic:

Separating the art from the badly behaved artist – a philosopher’s view and one online debate (audio only)

Should we separate art from the artist? (This is long, but you get the ideas pretty quickly.)

If you search on “separating the art from the artist” or “should we patronize artists who misbehave?” or the names of artists who have been credibly accused of misconduct, you’ll find lots more on the topic.

We’re hoping to focus on the questions raised when the artists have misbehaved, not on whether or not they actually have done what they are accused of. What do you think we should do in these cases? Have you ever found yourself conflicted about whether, for example, you should watch a Woody Allen movie or listen to Richard Wagner’s music because of their behavior? We hope that this will be the basis for an interesting conversation.

*Note: This will be a Zoom only meeting.

We hope to see you there and please don’t forget to RSVP.
