The Ethical Humanist Society of Rochester monthly meeting series is back as special guest Harry Reis joins them to talk about friendship. Harry is a professor of Psychology and a dean’s professor Arts, Science, and Engineering at the University of Rochester. In Harry’s view, friendship (defined broadly, to include all manner of voluntary relationships) is the foundation of most human activity. Extensive research shows that successful relationships are a strong (and perhaps the strongest) predictor of happiness, emotional well-being, productivity, and living a long life. Our ability to form and maintain voluntary relationships played a critical role in the evolution of the human genome. It bears asking then, what leads us to form a friendship with one person and not with another? And, once a friendship has been established, what helps determine whether those friendships will thrive and endure or languish and fade away? When we ask “What are our obligations to our friends?” It’s important to discuss why we form friendships, what we get out of these associations, and what we would lose were they to disappear. We look forward to a lively discussion of these issues.
*Note: This will be a Zoom-only meeting.
