Humanist Anti-Racist Activism

Posted on 11 Jul 2015

HughTaft-MoralesHugh Taft-Morales, Leader of the Baltimore Ethical Society and Philadelphia Ethical Society, spoke on April 4, 2015 at the Ethical Humanist Society of Philadelphia about “Humanist Anti-Racist Activism.”

In the light of the “Black Lives Matter” movement, how can humanists become more effective anti-racist activists? Liberal guilt and invisible racism have long paralyzed predomi- nantly white progressive communities. Hugh Taft-Morales again examines this persistent challenge by exploring it within the context of humanism and our Ethical Culture history. What will it take to ensure that the worth of people of all colors be honored? Can we live up to President Obama’s challenge at the foot of the Edmund Pettis Bridge? Are we “strong enough to be self-critical” so we can help “remake this nation to more closely align with our highest ideals”?
