Chris Hedges, pulitzer-prize winning journalist and author, spoke for the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture‘s Charley Horwitz Memorial Platform on September 28, 2014 about “The Global Culture of Violence: What Is The Path to Peace and Justice?”
For more than 20 years, 15 of them with the New York Times, Chris Hedges covered conflicts in Central America, Africa, the Middle East and the Balkans. His book “War is a Force That Gives Us Meaning” explores the poison of war and what it does to individuals and societies. Other books, including “American Fascists,” “Empire of Illusion, “Death of the Liberal Class” and “Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt,” which he wrote with the graphic artist Joe Sacco describe the predatory nature of corporate capitalism. Hedges, who has taught at Princeton, Columbia, New York University and the University of Toronto, publishes a weekly column for Truthdig. He currently teaches prisoners at a maximum-security prison in New Jersey.
The Charley Horwitz Platform honors the life and work of a former president of the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture who was a devoted community organizer, civil rights activist, labor lawyer and international humanitarian. Each year, the Ethical Action Committee invites a speaker to explore a social justice theme.
