Dr. James Croft, Outreach Leader of Ethical Society of St. Louis, spoke on February 18, 2018 at the Ethical Culture Society of Silicon Valley about “We Should All be Protesters.” (Click on camera icon in upper right corner to open video.)
America was founded in protest: a ragtag band of law-breaking protesters gathered their courage and told a king he was wrong. From the start, protest—a form of political questioning—has been integral to the ideal of America. Today, though, we’re often encouraged to believe that protest is subversive and protesters are “other people”—“we” are discouraged from joining “them.”

The American Ethical Union has passed a resolution--Defending the Right to Vote--to "stand up for a democracy that protects our values and our constitutional right to cast our vote." The words of the resolution are contained in the graphic as a reminder of the importance of protecting this precious right. You can also read the resolution at aeu.org/resource/2019-defending-the-right-to-vote/. Please do read it.
The resolution cites many concerns about ways in which our right to vote is being eroded and why it needs to be defended and then points to multiple ways to defend it. Certainly we need to exercise our right to vote at every opportunity, but we also need to work together to ensure that everyone who is eligible to vote can get registered and have convenient access to the ballot.
Where to begin? Anywhere. When to start? Now. What to do? Everything you can.
