1986 – The Forcible Return Of Refugees From El Salvador
Submitted to the AEU 78th Assembly
Whereas the forcible return of refugees from El Salvador asking asylum in the United States places these people in serious risk of injury and death, and,
Whereas such action by the United States clearly violates the tradition of providing a haven for the politically persecuted and suffering,
Therefore Be It Resolved that the American Ethical Union strongly support the Moakley-DeConcini Bill (H.R. 822 in the House, S. 377 in the Senate) to suspend deportation of Salvadorans from the United States for approximately two years, providing the time required for a careful study of the problems involved, and
The American Ethical Union support this Bill as a sane and humane response to the ongoing violence against civilian non-combatants in El Salvador.
