The Philadelphia Ethical Society (PES) invites members of sibling Ethical Societies and their guests to our annual picnic and weekend overnight event at Camp Linden on August 9-11 (rain dates August 16-18).
Camp Linden, where PES operates its environmental education and swimming program for inner-city children, is a mostly wooded property along the Brandywine Creek in rural Chester County, near West Chester, Pennsylvania. The facilities include a swimming pool, bath house, raised bed garden, hiking trails and Brandywine Creek landing. It is located in the heart of the Brandywine Valley, home of world-renowned gardens, museums and historic sites: www.thebrandywine.com/attractions. Longwood Gardens, Brandywine River Museum and Brandywine Battlefield Park are within 10 miles of Camp Linden.
The PES picnic takes place from noon to 5 PM on Sunday, August 11. We will accommodate tent camping on the Camp Linden grounds on Friday and Saturday nights, August 9-10. (Rain dates are August 16-18, picnic on the 18th.) We have a limited number of tents, air mattresses and tarps to lend campers who do not have their own. We have also made tentative arrangements for overnight accommodations at Temenos, a conference center near Camp Linden. Activities offered on Saturday include lawn games, swimming, hiking and kayaking; or visiting local attractions. We will provide a vegetarian dinner, campfire and fireworks Saturday evening, and blueberry pancake breakfast on Sunday.
Our plan to reserve Temenos is contingent upon receiving an adequate number of individual reservations to justify the facilities fee. Temenos has 8 bedrooms, each with 2 or 3 beds and a private bathroom. The room-rate is $100 for single occupancy; $75 for double occupancy and $60 for triple occupancy; plus 11% tax. Anyone who wants to stay at Temenos should let us know as soon as possible. If we are unable to reserve Temenos, there are other overnight accommodations available in the area we can recommend at various price levels.
Please contact Sharon Wallis by email to reserve your spot.
Ethical Societies interested in participating should designate a contact person and provide their contact information. Individuals may contact Sharon directly, identifying their Ethical Society association, and contact information including email and mobile phone number. Individuals should state whether they plan to tent camp or stay at Temenos, the day and time they expect to arrive, the number of adults and children in their party, and whether they will need to borrow camping equipment.
We hope you will join us at Camp Linden in August!
